Odysseus/Ulysses

In the slideshow piece ‘Odysseus/Ulysses’ we start in the middle of the story, just like the Greek epos. During the fall of 2012, I traveled to the United States for three months. Every other week I moved my bags to a new place – a new bed. Some people I knew and some were strangers. I started to photograph the places I slept in, documenting my journey showing my findings in a slideshow. Text excerpts from The Odyssey and James Joyce’s Ulysses are presented through headphones in conjunction with the projection. The voice-over struggles with reading the text: stuttering, hesitation and starting over. The grandiose story pears down on a lone traveler and there is nothing heroic or grand about this individual’s tale. The text excerpts forms a new narrative in the relation to the uncertain storyteller. The intertextuality between Joyce’s and Homer’s pieces also constructs a space for the viewer to enter with their own experiences. By opening the story, the travels become a point for the viewer to enter mine.
